About Algoa Bay Tuna Classic –
the Classic Experience
The Standard Bank Algoa Bay Tuna
Classic held annually during May in
Nelson Mandela Bay, Port Elizabeth has
gained status over the past 12 years
becoming one of the feature events on the
national game fishing calendar. Nelson
Mandela Bay is also known as the
Watersport Capital of Africa.
The country’s
best anglers set out in search of the
majestic Yellowfin tuna and battle it out for
the heaviest catch.
2005 marks one of the most successful
Algoa Bay Tuna Classic’s held to date and
saw the event transformed from what was
traditionally a fishing event only, into a
“must be there” fishing and entertainment
bonanza.
Tunaland, the home of fun and fishtivities
sports spectacular oceanic views. The
tented village offers a variety of foods from
the Food Hall and perfectly chilled
beverages. Experience the daily fish
weigh-ins at the revamped Macsteel VRN
Tuna Bowl. There is plenty to keep the
crowd busy – anglers and friends can
party into the early hours with top live
entertainment, making it the place to be.
Algoa FM Outdoor expo 2006
Algoa FM’s participation in this year’s expo
will create massive awareness for
exhibitors, sponsors and attract record
numbers to Tunaland 2006.
A 750m2 marquee will be incorporated into
"Tunaland" and will be the exclusive home of
the expo. This will form a pleasant and
professional viewing environment for visitors
who are expected to spend on average 3 – 8
hours visiting Tunaland. The increased angler
(approximately 750 entries) and public
participations (expected 3 000 to 3 500 people
per day) will guarantee exhibitors healthy
financial and marketing returns.
A highlight and focal point of each of the
"classic" days is the daily weigh-ins which
attracts a wide cross-section of the public. The
stadium like environment created for this
activity has shifted to in-between the Tunaland
entertainment marquee and the Tunaland
Outdoor Expo.
The new weigh-in area will have larger, open air
grandstand to accommodate more public and
in turn allow for increased number of visitors to
the expo. If daily catches are slow, the EXPO
will be assured of more visitors. If catches are
high, the commentator will have more time and
more spectators to send your way, once the
fish are weighed. Weigh in happens from about
14h30 to about 19h00 on the four angling days.
